Soccer rule question

Postby 8cylinders » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:22 pm

I've been poking around the web but am just coming up empty on this one. Probably operator error again.

What happens if a team some how ends up having an extra guy on the field? I know when they substitute players they do the board thing so it's seems pretty unlikely but in my thinking it might happen. Kind of like to many men in hockey.

I'm not a soccer expert or that big a fan but I watch some games with my 92 year old dad to keep him company in the evening. I asked him that but I don't know if he understands the question or not. He has dementia so it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't understand me.

Thanks for any help.........

From Law 3 of the laws of the game

Substitute or substituted player
If a substitute or a substituted player enters the field of play without
permission:
• the referee must stop play (although not immediately if the player in
question does not interfere with play or if the advantage can be applied)
• the referee must caution him for unsporting behaviour
• the player must leave the field of play
If the referee stops play, it must be restarted with an indirect free kick for the
opposing team from the position of the ball when play was stopped (see
Law 13 – Position of free kick).

Because, at the professional level, only three substitutes are allowed, and all substitute must come through the 4th officials, this is highly, highly unlikely.
