TORONTO – Defenseman Mike Weaver has retired at 37, after an 11-year career in the NHL in which he played the last two seasons with the Montreal Canadiens.

The former Michigan State star announced his retirement today in a statement by the NHL Players’ Association, saying he “never could have imagined” such a career.

Weaver also played for the Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Florida Panthers. Undrafted out of MSU, Weaver helped Montreal reach the Eastern Conference finals in the 2013-14 season.

Weaver, born in Brampton, Ontario, will continue working with his hockey school.
